Zimbabwe has been experiencing a steady rise in the number of female teenagers who drop out of school due to teenage pregnancies . This is due to a number of factors which include peer pressure, inadequate sex education as well as visual media sex exposure which results in many children engaging in premarital sex .While falling pregnant when one is still in school is absolutely wrong , there is need for the government of Zimbabwe to introduce the school re-entry programme for adolescent mothers . The school re entry initiative is meant to accord girls who drop out of school owing to early pregnancy and opportunity to be re-admitted back to their formal schools after delivery .This initiative however does not exist in Zimbabwe as the Zimbabwean government does not allow school re-entry for adolescent mothers .While most people are of the view that school re-entry promotes immorality among school children , i beg to differ with that view and hereby advocate for the government of Zimbabwe to introduce school re-entry for adolescent mothers .
Initially , the non existence of the school re-entry policy in Zimbabwe goes against the gender equality policy in the country . This is because mostly when a girl child falls pregnant while still in school ,in most cases the male responsible will also be student . The gender inequality unveils whereby the girl is the one who is expelled from school while the male counterpart is left to continue with his studies . It takes two people to make a baby and therefore both responsible parties should face the same consequences therefore if expulsion from school is the outcome , then both parties must be expelled from school , not only the girl child .However , since the male counterpart is allowed to continue with his education , it is only fair enough that the girl be allowed school re-entry after giving birth .
More so , the school re-entry policy awards the girl child a second chance at life and therefore enables her to realise her dreams . The non existence of the school re-entry policy in Zimbabwe results in most girls surviving a life of poverty since they will be unable to find decent jobs due to lack of education . Denying a girl child school re-entry will result in the teenage mother not being able to take proper care of her child since she would have been denied the second chance to finish her education .The school re-entry policy enables the girl to pursue her dreams despite of having made a mistake .
The government of Zimbabwe must consider introducing the school re-entry for adolescent mothers as this results in economic empowerment through education as well as contributing significantly to national development after they finish their studies . Zambia is one of the country which implemented this school re-entry policy and has since reaped the benefits since most of the beneficiaries of this initiative have managed to finish their education and contributed to national development of the country . In Zimbabwe , most of the girls who fall pregnant while in high school are expelled from their formal schools and are therefore forced to enrol at in formal colleges after giving birth .This move often results in these girls falling pregnant again before finishing their studies as a result of the freedom that they experience at these colleges . Most of these colleges are not as strict as formal schools and this gives students room of being mischievous , which then results in them either falling pregnant again or failing dismally in their studies .
In conclusion , the government of Zimbabwe should seriously consider introducing the school re-entry policy as it will result in a brighter Zimbabwe , with equal opportunities for all .
